I am watching "Open Water" on Channel 3 - divers left behind by their dive boat and there's a shark about. I'm so tense, just waiting for the damn thing to attack; my blood pressure is rising, methinks.
Please don't all go to bed and leave me, will you? I need to see them safe before I can go to bed. _________________ Handle stressful situations like a dog: if you can't eat it or play with it, just wee on it and walk away! |

Aaaaarrrgggghhhhh!!!! Don't let go, Ex-B; the sharks are circling and starting to attack!
Another 40 minutes to go yet! I can't leave it or I'll have nightmares.
Not going to have a shower tonight, either! Staying away from any water. _________________ Handle stressful situations like a dog: if you can't eat it or play with it, just wee on it and walk away! |

OMG... I couldn't have watched that in a million years... too many memories!
I was in Australia, on a day trip from Cairns to the Outer Barrier Reef. I was snorkelling around and spotted a couple of very pretty fish that I wanted to photograph together. The little beasties kept swimming apart at the last moment. I kept snorkelling after them. Eventually got my photo. Raised my head.... OMG, where was the dive boat????? _________________ You're a lot happier when you're happy. |

Many years ago, I was swimming off Porthcurno; the beach slopes steeply down to the sea and the sea bed slopes steeply too, so that when you are 15 feet away from the shoreline, you are in 15 feet of water. I was well out, floating on my back, lazily moving my legs just to keep afloat. The sun was shining, my boys were playing at the water's edge with Dad . . . . . then I looked up to the clifftop where the Minack Theatre is. Several people were up there, waving. People were waving from the cliff on the other side of the bay, too. I seemed to be the only person in the water, too and on the beach, people were waving . . frantically.
Hmmmm, better get back to shore, I thought. Swimming back to shore, I bumped into some rocks: funny, I thought, I don't remember rocks being there before.
Dropping down under the surface to see my way through, I saw a shark just drifting past me; the small, black piggy eye will remain in my memory for ever. It was the second one of a pair which were following the contours of the bay; they had been seen approaching by the watchers on the cliff - hence the frantic waving!
OK, it was a basking shark - harmless - as everyone kept assuring me when I staggered ouit of the water, my legs bleeding from grazing the shark's rough skin. I thought I'd been bit; I couldn't speak, catch my breath or stand up withouit assistance. For the rest of that holiday I was paranoid and wouldn't let my boys play in rock pools!
So last night's film was not an easy one to watch - but neither could I leave it without seeing the end.
It wasn't good: no-one on the dive boat had missed them; other boats were in the area but didn't see the couple as they waved at them; even a light aircraft didn't seem to notice them. So they were in the water all day; as evening approached, sharks appeared, bumping them and splashing around them. Suddenly, the man's leg was bitten badly, blood in the water, girlfriend managed to tighten a belt around the leg. They released their backpacks, etc and swam away from the circling sharks. Sharks took the backpacks and things quietened down as the sun was setting.
Back on land, the hotel manager realised the couple were missing and instructed the boatman to go back to the area.
So there was I, fists clenched, not daring to move, waiting for the rescue - but it didn't happen! The sunset was beautiful, turning the sea red and orange; the couple were still clinging together . . . but then the man drifted away, unconscious from losing so much blood; the girlfriend was in shock, watching the sharks which had returned and were circling once again. Where was the boat??? Come on!!!!
But the girl took off her face mask, let it float away and just sank beneath the waves.
The credits came up and alongside there was a small picture, showing a shark being landed, weiughed and slit open. Out fell an oxygen mask and a regulator. _________________ Handle stressful situations like a dog: if you can't eat it or play with it, just wee on it and walk away! |

Thanks for the update Rosie. A bit scarey though bumping a shark in real life.
Miss. E-B and the littlies are always watching horror films (thankyou twins ). Then they are frightened to be anywhere alone especially if it's dark. _________________ Give the devil an inch; and he'll become your ruler. |
