Your definition of independence is clearly different from mine. Independence generally means that it is a sovereign nation and not under the rule of another country. Most of those are simply islands belonging to a larger state.
Sicily is in Italy, Malta is independent.

The Italian unification of 1860 led to the dissolution of this kingdom, and Sicily became an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Italy. Sicily is today an autonomous region of Italy.

It's still a region of Italy though and therefore doesn't really qualify unless you're working to different criteria than am I.

Independence is NOT the criteria here.
Most would see Tibet as a country in its own right. Now the Spratley Islands are shown as being sovereign, but they are claimed all or in part by various nations.
The fate of the USA States was defined by Abe Lincoln, in the American Civil War. That included Florida.
Right now which country does Sabah rightfully belong to? We can take issues of sovereignity to BN if anyone would like, and argue every country on a one for one basis. Or we can accept that England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales all compete as countries in sports, and not as team UK. Similar with other countries.
