My little dining room needs new floor-covering. I dropped the hot iron in the doorway some months ago. Thought I could live with the mark it made but....
well I am seriously trying to decide what to replace the carpet with.
At the mo its the same carpet throughout the flat....except for kitchen and bathroom.
I keep looking at pictures of wooden flooring but keep going back to carpet ideas.
Can anyone give me their opinion on wooden flooring please.

Personally, I reckon wooden floors are great for families with kids and dogs, because they are so much easier to clean up any mess.
But unless you are exceptionally messy eaters, Amy, I reckon you would prefer the comfort and cosiness of carpet underfoot.
I have a wooden floor in the kitchen, but I went and bought a big rug which covers most of it. It looks and feels nicer! _________________ Handle stressful situations like a dog: if you can't eat it or play with it, just wee on it and walk away! |

Lol thats what I am fighting myself with Rosie.
There is just the two of us, both very tidy people....I am worried about making a mistake because preparing the room won't be easy for us, so only want to do it the once.
Thanks for your input. _________________ Life is a coin, you can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once |

Well we are all different but I'd go for carpet every time, soft and warm underfoot, cosy in the winter.

Cheap laminate creaks and eventually lifts, and is, in my opinion, a false economy.
Real wood floors damage incredibly easily. My sister and a friend have both had real wood floors put down, both spent a fortune, both had them waxed and/or sealed with some kind of varnish thing. Both regret having them laid. Both have liquid stains, digs, scratches, scrapes and scuffs all over the floors, almost within days. And when the light is shining at 'just' the wrong angle, no amount of polishing, waxing or whatevering can hide the problems. And god forbid you spill any red colour liquid (wine, ribena etc) .. black stains forever.
Karndean and Amtico are hardwearing and generally better fitted than laminate, but a sod to take up if there is a problem under the floor. |

I have a wooden floor and I hate it, every little piece of dust and fluff shows up. My husband says it would all still be there on a carpet, but if I can't see I don't care! I also find it very cold underfoot if I am barefooted.
So that's a NO from me. Carpet everytime. |

Thanks folks...
We have been "just looking" this afternoon. I am sure now I don't want wood not even one of the look alike woods.
We had Karndean in our bathroom at our last house. It was ok-ish. But yes Flo although we never wanted to take it up, the people who bought it did. They told us it had stuck like S*** to a blanket lol.
Nanna you are so right too. I am sure had I decided on wood of any kind I would want a rug....and us oldies have to avoid tripping up don't we.
Lyntris I suppose we could have claimed but by the time we'd paid the excess and possible raise in premiums it wouldn't be worth it. Its such a small room.
Think we will replace whats already down, that matches through the rest of the flat...
Thanks everyone _________________ Life is a coin, you can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once |

With wood floors as well the chances of slipping are very much higher. The wood was high maintenance too, so it was covered with carpet in the end. _________________ Give the devil an inch; and he'll become your ruler. |

For future reference, you can buy velcro-like pads that stick the rug to the floor (but its still easy to pull up for cleaning) I highly recommend them!

Just to buck the trend, we have tiles and laminate everywhere. But then a) we have underfloor heating so carpet is out and b) Kal has a severe allergy to dust mites so fabrics in the house are a no-no anyway. Never had a problem with laminate and you can get it cleaner as there's no pile for the dirt to get stuck in _________________ If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, you've made a discovery |

Our house here is completely tiled in every room, but of course the floor is never really cold, even if you choose to go around barefoot. We all have flip-flop style house slippers to wear indoors. Yes easy to keep clean, all floors are mopped every morning with a disinfectant cleaner.
However as I say; there's a difference between UK, and the tropics. I guess here if we had carpet, dust would be the problem more than anything else. _________________ Give the devil an inch; and he'll become your ruler. |
