I'm presenting at a conference (for lecturers) and need some inspiration for ideas. I've been to only one before as "audience" and found there was a wide variety of dress from very formal suits down to jeans and shirts. I want to strike the right balance as a presenter really. I need to go shopping as my day to day workwear is comfortable and sturdy (not glam enough) and my special occasions wear is more for weddings and parties (inappropriate for the occasion, too glam?) Clothing issues include the fact that I am not especially slender (14 to 16 to be realistic) and I struggle with heels but don't want to turn up in clunky sensible shoes. I want something that is fashionable and feminine but smart and serious enough to get people to listen to what I'm talking about! (early intervention to resolve difficulties with maths on HE programmes). Any ideas folks? Not massive budget ones if possible, I'm thinking high street stores type stuff.

Personally I have found dresses and a jacket are a failsafe. If you're a 14/16 as I variously have been, tucked in things just look sack-of-spudsy up on stage unless you have a flat chest and washboard stomach.

Something like this

or this

With a jacket like this

and shoes like this that won't fall off your feet at an inopportune moment

are always a safe bet

I think Flo has got it spot on with wearing a dress - lets face it with a dress there's nothing to come 'up tucked' nothing to have to match with. Small print doesn't show any spills or marks and jersey doesn't crease !! I'm your sort of size and would go for something like this

http://www.lauraashley.com/Dresses/COWL-NECK-MONOCHROME-PRINT-DRESS/invt/md768blackp

With the smart jacket and shoes

Go to a personal shopper. I did at Debenhams before a recent wedding and they were fantastic. I bought trousers, three tops, two pair of shoes... jewellery and I am larger than you PNM. I called up for an appointment; they asked which branch I wanted to visit; what was the occasion. Had a call from the branch within 30 mins. When I went to the appointment I was taken into the personal shopping suite with huge changing rooms comfy chairs, large mirrors - offered tea, coffee, water, apple juice. Had a discussion about size and the kind of thing I might like. Then off she went and came back with a load of things to try. Stuff I would never have considered. Then off she went again once we had decided it would be trousers and top.. came back with more stuff. You do not have to pay for the service, you are under no obligation to buy, and the shoppers do not get commission. They brought me a wide price range of items so weren't trying to push the designer stuff. I could not recommend the service highly enough.

d'you know, I tried that when I needed a wedding outfit a few years ago - a wedding where I would be there alongside my ex-H and his new wife and I simply had to look fabulous! I went to Selfridges in Brum and the lady had a walking stick and was tiny, so I felt guilty when she loaded herself up with clothes! I didn't buy anything in the end, nothing was quite right. I got a white shoulderless dress from Coast instead (and indeed, did look fab! Wink )

I bought the Laura Ashley dress recomended by Lesley and it is lovely!

Have also used personal shoppers at Debenhams several times. Each time I was delighted with outfits I bought - often things I would never have considered trying on.

Well I've bitten the bullet and ordered the Next trouser suit online! Embarassed Wink I need another smart outfit for work but the dreaded ugly shoes make skirts out of the question atm, so a trouser suit it is!

I'm very impressed with the online ordering - you select a day and time for delivery and they don't take payment until you are happy with what you've bought, and even then they send you a statement first!

If you want a £20 voucher off your next order (and I get one too!) just let me know and we can both benefit Very Happy

I've been looking for a black jacket like the one you suggested Flo for ages.....so I've just ordered it, thank you Very Happy
